Customer Profile

The customer is a leading trade association representing the solar and energy storage industry in the United States. They operate an online community portal built on Drupal that enables authorized members to access a wide range of resources, collaborate, and connect with peers.

Customer Requirements

The client manages core customer data, including contacts, accounts, membership groups, and divisions, in Salesforce, which serves as their primary data source. The newly developed Drupal-based community portal required access to the same data to deliver a personalized member experience. Several integration challenges needed to be addressed:

Data Synchronization - Ensuring that customer data stored in Salesforce was accurately reflected in the Drupal portal, and that updates made in the portal were synchronized back to Salesforce.

Single Source of Truth — Salesforce needed to remain the authoritative data source while allowing members to view and update their information through the Drupal portal.

Data Consistency and Integrity — Maintaining consistent and up-to-date records across both systems without creating duplicate or conflicting data.

Real-Time or Near Real-Time Updates — Enabling timely synchronization so that changes made in either system were reflected quickly in the other.

Secure Data Integration — Implementing a secure mechanism to exchange data between Drupal and Salesforce while protecting sensitive member information.

Scalability — Designing the integration to support a growing number of users and increasing data volumes as the community portal expands.

Our Solution

We implemented the Salesforce Suite module, a contributed Drupal module designed to facilitate seamless integration with the Salesforce platform. This module provides a flexible framework for connecting Drupal with Salesforce, enabling both data synchronization and API-based communication between the two systems. The following submodules were used to handle specific tasks:

Salesforce Integration

Responsible for the core Drupal–Salesforce integration layer.

Salesforce JWT Auth Provider

Handles key-based Salesforce authentication.

Salesforce Mapping

Maps Drupal entities to Salesforce objects to synchronize exchanged data accurately.

Salesforce Mapping UI

Provides a user interface for managing field mapping settings.

Salesforce Logger

Provides consolidated logging of all Salesforce log events.

Salesforce Push

Pushes Drupal data updates to Salesforce when changes are made on the portal.

Salesforce Pull

Imports Salesforce objects into Drupal based on the configured mapping.

Salesforce SOAP

Exposes a SoapClient service to communicate with the Salesforce SOAP API.

Salesforce Webform

Adds support for webform fields in the mapping process, enabling Drupal–Salesforce webform integration.

Benefits

Centralized website and CRM data enabled the customer to maintain a single, consistent view of their members.

Enhanced data governance gave the customer better control and visibility over sensitive customer information.

Integrated customer data enabled more personalized and relevant digital experiences across the portal.

Improved alignment across marketing and service teams resulted in more consistent and effective member engagement.

Key Challenges

No custom configuration available for push events.

When failure items accumulated in the queue, further processing halted for all queued items, requiring manual intervention.

Absence of item-level event logs on the Salesforce side.
